Giving Credit

The people kept shouting, ‘The voice of a god, and not of a mortal!’ And immediately, because Herod had not given the glory to God, an angel of the Lord struck him down, and he was eaten by worms and died.     Acts 12:22-23

When we do not give credit to God for all God has done for us, we die. Little by little, day by day, consumed by our own self-importance we grow smaller. We shrivel. We become short sighted and tightfisted people whose lives do not reflect the grandeur of God. We live entirely forgettable lives that are fit only for worms to feed on when we expire.

God calls us to grand living—expansive and appreciative living. The kind of living that prompts an athlete to point to the heavens after making a great play, publicly acknowledging that all good things—all talent and ability and good fortune—originate in God.

Have you given thanks to God today?

Lord, if I were to give you adequate thanks and praise for all you have done and for all you are doing in my life, there would little time for any other activities in the course of my day. That is how numerous the blessings I have received from your hand are. May each breath of mine be an expression of my boundless gratitude. In Jesus’ name, I pray. AMEN.
