More Than We Can Imagine

Now to him who by the power at work within us is able to accomplish abundantly far more than all we can ask or imagine, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen. Ephesians 3:20–21

We can imagine so much for ourselves. We have the ability to dream big, and perhaps even begin to pursue those dreams in the hope of making some of them a reality. We have visions for the way we would like our lives to look and feel. Whether a casual daydream or a profound sense of personal mission, we can envision a whole universe of possibilities for ourselves . . . We just have some serious doubts about our ability to accomplish all that we desire to do with our lives.

Paul lets us know that as big as we feel we can dream for ourselves and our world, God’s vision for our lives is even more expansive. God has an eternal and infinite imagination that far surpasses our own. In fact, our most outlandish ask of God—our most fervent prayer and desire—is not nearly as grand as what God is prepared to do in our lives. God’s dreams for you are so much bigger than your dreams for yourself. Perhaps, then, we should leave some of the dreaming to God while we get to work on following God’s commands.

What is your most expansive dream for yourself right now?

Lord God, you are eternal, your imagination is infinite, and your life is everlasting. How could I possibly out-think, out-dream, or out-imagine you? It is not possible. You are able to accomplish in my life and in the world more than I could ever imagine. I am small, you are expansive . . . Thank you for allowing me to participate in what you have planned for creation. In Jesus’ name, I pray. AMEN.
