Revealed!

Go down to the potter's house, and there I will let you hear my words.     Jeremiah 18:2

God told Jeremiah to go to the local potter, and there, watching the potter at work, Jeremiah would learn something about God. Jeremiah was man of faith steeped in the faith practices of his people. However, when God was ready to reveal an important truth to Jeremiah, God didn’t tell Jeremiah to pray more or read more scripture or go up to Jerusalem to hear the divine word spoken aloud by the priests of the temple. Instead, God said he would be revealed through the created order and the creative process itself.

If like Jeremiah you are a person of prayer, if you take time each morning to read scripture, if you engage regularly in Christian community, something extraordinary happens—you start seeing God, and seeing God at work all around you. Creation becomes the mouthpiece of God. For people of faith who do the daily work of faith, simply watching a potter’s hands at work should reveal something about how God shapes and reshapes our lives and our world.

Can you learn something about God by observing the created order and the creative process?

Lord, open my eyes that I might see. Open my ears that I might hear. Awaken my senses so that I am able to witness your divine hand in the world around me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. AMEN.
