Saying No...and Yes

When the disciples found Jesus they exclaimed, "Everyone is looking for you!" Jesus replied, "Let's go somewhere else."      Mark 1:37-38a

As Jesus began his earthly ministry, crowds often swarmed around him, longing for him to make them well. They wanted Jesus to be a celebrity healer, but Jesus knew his primary work was to be a faithful preacher. Early one morning, as the people once again hounded him for his healing power, Jesus had to put his foot down. “Let’s go somewhere else.” Jesus said “no” to the demands and desires of the crowd so that he could say “yes” to his true calling.

Each one of us has been uniquely gifted to serve others to the glory of God. God has equipped us with talents meant to benefit the world, but there are also countless demands that invade our lives each and every day. The challenge is finding ways to say “no” to the diversions so that we can say “yes” to making the most of our God-given abilities.

What distractions are preventing you from utilizing your unique gifts?

Lord, so often I forget that you have called me into your service. I get so caught up in making a living that I forget to make a life that is pleasing to you. Help me to meet my responsibilities without getting carried away by all the distractions. Remind me of my giftedness, and help me to focus on making the most of the talents you have given me. In Jesus’ name, I pray. AMEN.
