South Shore churches rebuild Lahaina homes with Habitat for Humanity
On August 8th, 2023, devastating wildfires struck three communities on the island of Maui—Kula, Kīhei, and Lahaina. It became the most destructive wildfire in the United States in more than 100 years.
Of the three areas, Historic Lahaina suffered the greatest devastation. Thousands of structures were damaged or destroyed, leaving families, businesses, and entire neighborhoods with nothing overnight. Much of Lahaina was virtually wiped out.
This November, four members of UCC Norwell (John + Laurie Galvin, Dave Marsden, and Jane Bogaty), three members of House of Prayer Hingham, and two regular Habitat volunteers traveled to Lahaina to support the reconstruction of two Habitat homes.
During our time there, we were able to frame most of one house, wrap another in vapor barrier, and install windows. It was both a rewarding and deeply meaningful experience.
Although the work was hard—especially under the hot sun—we also had time to enjoy Maui’s hospitality. We attended a wonderful luau, enjoyed a relaxing sunset sail, and took part in a memorable Mahalo Celebration.
